Oily skin results in case of the  excess production of sebum from sebaceous glands. These glands are present under the skin’s surface of every human. Sebum is an oily substance consists of fats. Sebum isn’t all bad as it helps protect and moisturize your skin, gives your skin fresh look and keeps your hair shiny and healthy. However, too much sebum may result in oily skin, which can lead to clogged pores and acne. Many factors like genetics, hormone changes, or even stress may enhance sebum production. Oily skin and acne are challenging to manage and live with and lowers our confidence. Thankfully, home remedies often reduce symptoms without the use of prescription drugs or expensive skin care regimens. Here are 10 remedies for oily skin you can try at home and these remedies are really cheap and easily available but highly effective.

1. Wash your face


Many people with oily skin usually wash their face once daily which is not enough for oily skin. If your skin’s oily, you should wash your face twice or thrice a day — but don’t overdo it. Avoid harsh soaps or detergents. Use a gentle soap such as aloe extracts, papaya extracts, honey extracts or neem extracts soap.


2. Honey

Honey is one of nature’s most revered skin remedies. It has antibacterial and antiseptic abilities, it may benefit oily and acne-prone skin.

Honey is also a natural moisturizer, so it helps keep the skin moist but not oily. This is because it is also best cleanser that draw moisture from the skin without replacing it.

To use honey to treat acne and oily skin, apply a thin layer of raw honey onto your face; let it dry for about 10 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with warm water following cold water.


3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain salicylic acid, the acids in tomatoes may help absorb excess skin oils and unclog pores. To make an exfoliating tomato mask:

          1. Mix 1 teaspoon sugar with the pulp of 1 tomato.
          2. Apply to the skin in a circular motion.
          3. Leave the mask on for 5 minutes on your face and neck.
          4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water than pat dry.


4.Cosmetic clay

Cosmetic clays, also known as healing clay, is used to absorb skin oil and treat many other skin problems. French green clay is well-known treatment for oily skin and acne since it’s highly absorbent qualities. French green clay is available in market in powder form.

To use French green clay mask in spa:

          1. Make a mixture with filtered water or rose water in a teaspoon of clay until it forms a paste like consistency.
          2. Apply the clay mixture to your face and wait until it dries.
          3. Remove the clay with warm water.

Clay mask removal with water is much better and gentler on your skin than peel-off masks.

Oatmeal helps to treat inflamed skin and absorb excess oil. It also works to exfoliate dead skin. For facial masks purposes, oatmeal is usually used ground. It can be mixed with yogurt, honey, aloe vera gel and rose water To use oatmeal face mask on your face:

          1. Mix 1/2 cup ground oats with hot water to form a paste.
          2. Add 1 tablespoon honey.
          3. Massage the oatmeal mixture into your face and neck for about five minutes; clean your face and neck with warm water following cold water.

Egg whites and lemons are a folk remedy for oily skin and its been used since ancient times. Both ingredients are best known to tighten skin pores. The acid in lemons and other citrus fruits may help absorb oil but it's not suitable for extra sensitive skin. Lemons also have antibacterial abilities. However, this remedy is not a good choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies.

To prepare an egg white and lemon face mask:

          1. Combine 1 egg white (remove egg yolk) with 1 teaspoon  lemon juice.
          2. Apply it to your face, and leave it on until the mask dries.
          3. Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water.

Almonds are not just best to exfoliate your skin, but they also help clean up excess oils and other skin impurities.

 How to prepare an almond face scrub:

          1. Grind raw almonds to make equal to three teaspoons.
          2. Mix it with 2 tablespoons of raw honey.
          3. Apply to your face in circular motions and wait for 30 minutes
          4. Clean your face and neck with warm water.

 Do not use if you have a nut allergy.

8. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is known for soothing burns and to treat other skin and hair problems. It helps treat flaky skin caused by oily patches. Many people believe aloe vera is best treatment for oily skin.

Apply a layer of raw or any packed aloe gel available to you on your face and neck before you go to bed and leave it on until morning. If you have not used aloe vera before, it's best to do a patch test. If no reaction appears within 24 hours, you can continue to use it.

9. Jojoba oil

It’s considered that jojoba oil controls extra sebaceous glands secretion and helps into producing less sebum and help keep balance of oil levels. 

According to a 2012 study found that applying a mask made of healing clay and jojoba oil twice to thrice weekly helped heal skin lesions and mild acne cases.

Using too much may worsen oily skin. Try massaging a few drops into clean skin a few days. If you like the results, apply on daily basis.

Many people all over the world claim home remedies for oily skin are effective. Most home remedies aren’t well-researched till date. The effectiveness of a home remedy is more dependent on several things such as your environment according to weather and the quality of the natural products you use.
